Firing Pies ponder giant AFL forward mix

Collingwood will consider playing both Mason Cox and Ben Reid in their forward line after thrashing Port Adelaide by 39 points at Marvel Stadium.

Coach Nathan Buckley says Collingwood will consider the radical option of partnering Mason Cox with fellow tall Ben Reid after the latter's outstanding AFL comeback.

Summoned to replace the injured Cox (ankle), Reid delivered a strong performance in his first senior game in almost a year on Friday night as the Magpies thrashed Port Adelaide 15.18 (108) to 10.9 (69) at Marvel Stadium.

Reid struggled to find his radar in front of goal but was a constant threat, booting 1.4 and finishing with 13 disposals and seven marks.

The Pies have built their forward line around speed and pressure, utilising the 192cm Brody Mihocek as a mobile second tall alongside Cox.

But Buckley said the 196cm Reid, who was forced to mount his case in the VFL after successive soft-tissue injuries, had effectively demanded another senior game even if that meant playing him alongside the 211cm Cox.

"We've thrown that about ... it's something we might have to consider if the form warrants it," Buckley said.

"That's exactly the opportunity (Reid) had and I think he took it. That's the question that we'll ask ourselves and that Reidy's asked of the match committee.

"It's a really good problem to have."

Friday night's big win over the Power lifted the Magpies to second on the ladder, trailing Geelong only by percentages.

Buckley lauded a dominant start from his side which left the Pies leading 7.6 (48) to 0.3 (3) at quarter-time.

The Pies will sweat on a groin injury to prime mover Taylor Adams ahead of next Saturday's clash with Carlton at the MCG.

Adams limped from the ground early in the third quarter after pulling up sore in his left groin and played no further part in the game.

"He wasn't able to complete the game so that's a red flag straight away but we'll let that settle and see how it pans out," Buckley said.

"It's an adductor strain at this point. How serious or otherwise, we don't know."
