First Islamic museum opens doors in Australia

Australia's first Islamic museum has opened its doors to the public - showcasing the rich history, arts and culture of the religion.

It's hoped the ten million dollar centre will help break down Muslim stereotypes.

The project's been helped along by some international celebrity firepower with artist Yusuf Islam, formerly Cat Stevens, showing more than passing interest in its development.

For museum co-founder Moustaf Fahour, a one-time corporate banker, it's the culmination of a four-year dream.

"To really open the doors on what Islam is and the positive contribution Muslims have made to civilisation and more importantly to Australia," he said.

Islamic art, architecture and cultural links are on display as well as Middle Eastern food.

Masterchef finalist Samira El Khafir will run the cafe at the museum, which has been built in Melbourne's northern suburbs.
