Melbourne artist Warren Crossett has won the prestigious Doug Moran National Portrait Prize for his self-portrait inspired by St Jerome of Flanders.

The $150,000 reward is thought to be the world's most generous art prize and was announced in Sydney at Juniper Hall in Paddington on Wednesday.

Having worked as a commercial and children's book illustrator for most of his career, it was the first time Crossett had entered an art competition.

Crossett said he had no firm plans on how to spend the money but listed a few things off the top of his head: mortgage, a holiday, giving some to charity and buying some new art materials.

The Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize of $50,000 went to Trent Mitchell for his image Boy In Boat Hervey Bay.
