Johnson was sidelined by a throat infection while Tait is battling a thigh injury.
The series continues in Adelaide on Wednesday with the fast bowlers rated a chance to play.

Although Johnson appears more likely to return, batsman David Hussey said Tait would be keen to take part in front of his home crowd.
"He is just going to be monitored, hopefully he pulls up okay and can play Wednesday night, if not he'll probably look to Brisbane (on Sunday) and go from there," Hussey said.
"I think everybody in Australia wants to see Shaun Tait back playing because he's fantastic to watch and provides great entertainment."
Evergreen quick Brett Lee has lead Australia's bowling attack in their absence, winning man of the match award in Sydney for taking 3-27.
"Brett has been phenomenal since he's come back in," Hussey said.
"He is bowling with good pace and he's swinging the ball.
"He has been a breath of fresh air that the group probably needed, not only on the field but off the field, his work helping the younger bowlers out ... he has been brilliant."
England welcome back swing bowler Jimmy Anderson for the Australia Day clash, who returned home after the Ashes victory.
