Five dead in spate of Victorian crashes

Three men, a woman and young girl are dead after a spate of separate smashes in Victoria.

A driver who fled a fatal crash that killed his passenger remains on the run in Victoria.

Police say the car lost control in Cowes, on Phillip Island, just before 6am on Monday and hit a tree.

The 28-year-old male passenger died at the scene and the male driver is still being sought by police.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Neville Taylor called for anyone with information about the driver to contact police.

Another man, 51, died on Monday night when his four-wheel-drive left the road and crashed into a creek. The exact circumstances of the crash are being investigated.

Over the weekend, a five-year-old girl and 70-year-old woman died after two cars collided in Robinvale near Mildura on Sunday.

A 44-year-old Undera man also died after his car struck a tree in Merrigum, northern Victoria, on Sunday morning.

"All of these fatal collisions occurred on country roads - as has been the case for the majority of fatalities in Victoria this year," Acting Assistant Commissioner Taylor said.

The provisional state road toll has risen to 90 so far this year - 32 more than this time last year.

In 2018, Victoria had its lowest road toll in at least 30 years with 214 lives lost.

Deaths on country roads also dropped by almost a third last year.
