Five police officers and 15 Taliban militants have been killed in a gun battle in Afghanistan's southern Kandahar province, a police spokesman says.

Zia Durrani, the spokesman for the provincial chief police in Kandahar, said nine other officers were wounded in Sunday's attack on a police patrol in Marouf district near the border with Pakistan.

Durrani said 15 Taliban fighters were killed and 11 were wounded in the gun battle that lasted for several hours.

A spokesman for the Taliban, Qari Yussouf Ahmadi, claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement sent to media.
