Five die in horror day on NSW roads

Police are urging drivers to slow down after five people, including two teenagers and a pedestrian, were killed on NSW roads on Saturday.

Five people, including two teenagers, have died on NSW roads in a horror start to the Anzac Day long weekend.

Among the victims were three men from Orange, aged 17, 21 and 24, whose four-wheel drive left the highway near Trangie, northwest of Dubbo, and ploughed into a tree about 7.40am on Saturday.

Earlier, a 17-year-old girl was killed and her 15-year-old male passenger airlifted to hospital after their car also hit a tree, this time off the Old Hume Highway in Braemar, near Mittagong.

And a 44-year-old woman died in hospital after she was struck by a car at about 12.40am while crossing the road at Cardiff, near Newcastle.

Police are urging motorists to slow down after 1200 were caught speeding across the state in a long weekend crackdown that began on Friday.

"Police will be out in force this weekend," Acting Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith warned in a statement on Saturday.

On Friday night a 20-year-old male P-Plate driver was caught travelling at 142km/h in a 60km/h zone with four passengers at Narellen Vale in Sydney's southwest, police said.

And a 44-year-old man who was charged with high-range drink driving at Shoalhaven on Friday morning had two children aged three and five in the car at the time.
