Five killed in China mine gas explosion

Five miners have been killed in northern China after a gas explosion, with search and rescue personnel unable to save the group.

Five people have been killed in a gas explosion at a coal mine in northern China, state media reports.

The miners became trapped underground when the incident happened early on Monday in Yan'an in Shaanxi province, Xinhua said.

Search and rescue operations were unable to rescue the group, with all members confirmed dead early on Tuesday.

China is the world's largest producer and consumer of coal and its mines are regarded as some of the most dangerous.

Official statistics showed 375 mining-related deaths in 2017, which was down from over a thousand in 2013 as the government continues to crack down on illegal mines.
