A man is under police guard in hospital after he allegedly fled from police and caused a series of collisions through central Melbourne.

Officers tried to intercept a white Holden Commodore in the CBD, but it sped off, sideswiping a car on St Kilda Road and crashing into a Volkswagon, which was in turn propelled into a motorbike.

Police say the 24-year-old Commodore driver then swerved around the collision scene and continued at high speed until he crashed into several parked cars and a van on Kavanagh Street.

He was arrested there and taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital with a leg injury.

The other passengers in the Commodore, two 20-year-old females, were uninjured, Ambulance Victoria says.
