A busy intersection near Sydney Airport is expected to stay closed overnight following an operation to drain about 34,000 litres of fuel from a petrol tanker which had flipped over.
The tanker was drained and put on its wheels on Friday afternoon after the accident on a major road at Mascot in the city's south just before 4am, spilling between 200 and 300 litres of fuel.
Fire and Rescue NSW crews will remove the tanker after plugging up some leaks and the road will have to be repaired before it reopens, Superintendent Ian Krimmer told AAP.
"The fuel leak has caused extensive damage, Wentworth Avenue will remain closed for the rest of the night," he told AAP.
The 46-year-old male truck driver was not hurt in the crash.
Police say he returned a negative result in an alcohol breath test and that no other vehicle was involved in the incident.
"Preliminary investigations indicate at this stage that he's just been going a little bit too quick," NSW Police Acting Commander Scott Bingham told reporters.
The rollover has caused traffic chaos, with commuters in the area facing hour-long delays. Those travelling to the airport have been advised to take the train.
