Flood levy should be considered: govt MP

Liberal backbencher Andrew Laming says a flood levy should be considered to help Queensland get back on its feet after the cyclone and flood disaster.

A federal government backbencher believes a levy to assist with Queensland's recovery after its cyclone and floods disaster will be an "absolutely live option" as Treasurer Scott Morrison prepares his second budget.

Queensland MP Andrew Laming said it was not an unreasonable option when there had been an enormous impact from a natural disaster way beyond what insurers were going to cover.

"Historically it has been done before. Sometimes you have to take extraordinary steps to make sure things get done. This is another one of those cases," he told Sky News on Thursday.
