Victorians are being warned not to drive through floodwaters after a dad and his two young girls were rescued by a farmer on a jet ski when their car was submerged in East Gippsland.

The floods came after heavy rain fell across the region on Tuesday and Wednesday, with Bairnsdale receiving 86mm and some isolated parts getting close to 200mm.

Major flood warnings are in place for the Snowy, Mitchell, Latrobe and Tambo rivers.

The SES says it has received reports of boats escaping their moorings as rivers throughout the region rise to warning levels.

Locals have been advised never to walk, ride or drive through floodwater, and to stay away from waterways and stormwater drains.
