Flooding risk for parts of South Australia

The weather bureau has issued a flood watch for parts of South Australia as some wild weather moves through.

An intense low pressure system building in the Great Australian Bight could bring flooding to parts of South Australia with the wild weather forecast to move into across the state from late on Saturday.

The weather bureau says the system, which will hang around until Tuesday, will dump up to 80mm of rain and is packing gale force winds.

The weather bureau has issued a flood watch for parts of the mid-north and the Mt Lofty Ranges with the State Emergency putting crews on standby.

Bureau of Meteorology acting regional director John Nairn said a wide band of rain would move across the state, building on the wet conditions already experienced this winter.

He said South Australia easily exceeded its average rainfall in June and July was "kicking on".

"We have a very good climate signal in the Indian Ocean that indicates we're due for a wet winter and spring," he said.

"So this is acting according to our expectations."

SES commander Darren Halleday said with the risk of flooding and falling trees, crews would be on standby across the state.

He also urged people to take care around flowing water, particularly over roads.

"If it's flooded, forget it. Once you go into the water you lose control," he said.

The SES will also make sandbags available to concerned residents.
