Floodwaters could last for days: police

Run-off from surrounding hills is expected to top up floodwaters near Hobart over coming days as emergency crews keep watch.

It could be days before waters recede and life returns to normal for flood-affected communities near Hobart, where some residents have been evacuated.

The township of Huonville south of the state capital experienced its worst flood in more than two decades on Friday as the Huon River peaked at 4.3 metres.

Emergency service crews had expected the surge of water resulting from recent rains and melting snow but the inundation exceeded forecasts, with crews forced to knock on doors of homes overnight to wake and evacuate residents.

Roads were swamped and power was cut as a precaution, as photos emerged on social media of residents wading through the main street.

"That's probably going to be for a while because there is still quite a bit of water to come down from the hills following rain and snow," a police spokesman told AAP.

Late on Friday the town of New Norfolk, northwest of Hobart, also came under pressure, with evacuations of a caravan park and bowls club on the low-lying banks of the Derwent River.

"Everybody is out of danger - it's a slow rise of water so we had plenty of time to prepare," the spokesman added.

Emergency service crews will remain on standby, monitoring the water levels, as several Tasmanian rivers continue to be the subject of flood warnings.

At Huonville they started sandbagging on Thursday.

"This is the biggest (flood) in 20 years," SES manager Mark Nelson said.
