World surfing champion John John Florence and Brazilian Filipe Toledo lit up Bells Beach with aerial moves to highlight the start of the men's event.

Florence and Toledo easily won their round-one heats on Saturday, putting them in to round three.

Florence wowed the Rip Curl Pro crowd with an aerial move late in his opening-round heat.

It gave Florence a 9.03 wave score and a heat total of 17.20.

Toledo then upstaged Florence, posting the first perfect 10 wave score of this year's event with a ride that featured two aerial moves.

Toledo's outstanding heat also featured a 9.7 wave for a near perfect total score of 19.70.

Competition resumed on Saturday morning after two lay days.

After five of the 12 heats, organisers moved the location from the Bowl to nearby Winkipop because of the conditions.

Florence, Jeremy Flores of France and Australian Glyndyn Ringrose were the first heat at Winkipop.

Flores took the lead late in the heat and Florence needed a 5.13 wave score with just over a minute left.

Florence cut loose with his aerial for a 9.03 wave score.

It meant the Hawaiian phenomenon turned a tight contest in to a rout, easily accounting for Flores (13.87) and Australian Glyndyn Ringrose (11.24).

Florence had the highest wave and total scores until Toledo ran amok in the second-last heat.

"Changing venues like this, changing waves, it makes it more difficult," Florence said.

"But that's what makes it fun at the same time - makes it interesting and different.

"It keeps you on your toes, for sure."

Florence said the aerial was probably overkill but he enjoyed it.

"I got a little over-excited and it probably wasn't the smartest thing, but it sure was fun," he said.

"It worked out, so I wouldn't change anything - sometimes you feel it and you just go for it.

"I probably didn't surf the smartest heat I've surfed all year but that's what makes it fun.

"I can go back, re-watch it and see what I could have done better."

Florence leads the world rankings after taking out the Margaret River Pro earlier this week - his first major win in Australia.

Defending Rip Curl pro champion Matt Wilkinson, fellow Australians Owen Wright and Julian Wilson, American legend Kelly Slater, Brazilian former world champion Gabriel Medina and Bells winner Adriano De Souza were among the round-one winners.

Australian world champions Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson, also former Bells winners, were among those forced in to the sudden-death second round.

A long day of competition ended with the women's fourth round.

Australia's joint world ranking leaders Sally Fitzgibbons and Stephanie Gilmore won their heats to reach the quarter-finals.

Fitzgibbons wore a boot on her left foot after it was cut by her board fin three days ago.

Gilmore was behind until the last minute of her heat and narrowly beat Brazil's former Bells champion Silvana Lima.
