Falling rain did little to dampen the excitement at the 2016 Australian Record Industry Association awards ceremony in Sydney.

British pop star Robbie Williams was one of those who walked a slightly soggy red carpet.

"This is a new experience, an umbrella on the red carpet. But that's Australia for you, just rolling with it."

The night's winners included Montaigne (mon-TAYN) for Breakthrough Artist, Violent Soho for Best Group and Hilltop Hoods for Best Live Act.

The Australian Sikh hip-hop artist L-FRESH the Lion was nominated for Best Urban Album but lost out to Perth's Drapht.

Some used the stage to deliver political messages, such the electronic artist Flume.

He addressed Sydney's controversial lockout laws.

"To our policymakers and to our politicians: Please keep Sydney open so that ... please keep Sydney open so that the young artists, so that the next generation, can have the same opportunities that I had."

It was a successful night for Flume, who took home eight gongs, including Best Male Artist and Album of the Year.

Marriage equality was a theme of the night.

A stand-in for best female artist Sia called on the federal government to allow same-sex couples the same rights as those in heterosexual relationships.

Kylie Minogue and her fiance used a surprise appearance at the awards to thank supporters of their campaign to legalise it before introducing Perth singer Troy Sivan.

In his acceptance speech for Song of the Year, Sivan said he hoped he could inspire other gay Australians.

"This is just a little thing for every gay Australian kid who wants to go and make music, every LGBTQ kid who wants to go and make music. You can totally do it and win an ARIA, too. So, thank you so much, everyone."

There were also musical performances by John Farnham, Jessica Mauboy, Jimmy Barnes, Missy Higgins and The Veronicas.

But the biggest cheers were saved for the band Crowded House, inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame.

Guitarist Nick Seymour thanked Australian listeners for their support.

"You know, it's an incredible privilege to have the country, your own country, recognise you as an artist in your lifetime. I really give thanks for that."

The band followed that up with a performance of its song "Distant Sun."
