Folaus tossing up their sporting options

Israel Folau says it'd be nice to be based in the same city as his star netball wife Maria next season but there are no assurances of a package deal.

Where Israel Folau plays rugby union next season could be determined by where his wife Maria plays netball.

The off-contract Wallabies and NSW Waratahs star admits he would be "in a bit of trouble" if he made a call without consulting the New Zealand netball ace.

The shooter has been given the green light to play in Australia's Super Netball and still represent her country, putting herself on the market for next season.

Her husband is likely to remain at the NSW Waratahs but has been linked to a move north to join the Queensland Reds.

Playing in the same city would be a "best case scenario", according to Folau, who says he's in no rush to declare his next move.

But, noting there's no timeline on his decision, Folau says there's one person whose approval he would need before making it official.

"I'd probably be in trouble," he said of keeping his wife in the dark.

That decision could be taken out of his hands as soon as Tuesday, though, with the Giants set to announce a major player signing.

The Sydney-based team would be a good fit for the 128-Test veteran given the recent retirement of shooter Susan Pettitt.

But the Silver Ferns star, who had been travelling across the Tasman from Sydney to play for the Northern Mystics, could also be lured to the Sunshine Coast to play under newly installed national coach Noeline Taurua.

Maria's family also recently moved to Brisbane and the Wallabies back admitted his wife did enjoy the Queensland way of life.

"But she loves Sydney as well," he said.

"That's the best case scenario. We'd both like to be in the same state.

"But being athletes, it's something that doesn't always go that way.

"You get used to it and know that at some stage our careers will come to an end and all those things we don't have to worry about."

Folau is hopeful of overcoming an ankle injury to play for the Wallabies against South Africa in Brisbane on Saturday night.
