BBC reporter Jeremy Cooke explains "This country has always been poor but a toxic combination of failed harvest, political turmoil and Islamist violence has swept across the land."

According to international aid organisation Oxfam, almost 10 million Yemenis do not have food to eat.

This accounts for about half of the population of the poorest country in the Middle East.

The organisation is extending its global appeal for funds and is currently helping 100,000 Yemeni citizens to buy food by providing monetary relief.
