Food terror laws get VIP treatment

Laws to crack down on criminals who interfere with strawberries will get Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove's signature despite him being 4000km from Canberra.

Laws to put so-called "food terrorists" behind bars for up to 15 years are so urgent to get royal assent they are being flown to Darwin for Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove's signature.

Sir Peter is visiting the Humpty Doo school, 40km out of Darwin and 4000km from Canberra where the laws were passed by parliament in under four hours on Thursday.

It is understood the government's Boeing Business Jet will fly the legislation to Darwin.

The jet had already been lined up for what is known as a "planned pre-positioning flight" to pick up the Governor-General.
