Battling temperatures in the single digits and an early waking hour, near 30,000 fans made their way to the two live sites in Darling Harbour at Cockle Bay Wharf and the neighbouring Tumbalong Park.
Speaking to AAP Nausicaa Joannes spoke of the cold weather.

"I can't feel my feet; I'm so cold," Joannes said.
The sites were awash with green and gold, with scarfs and beanies being the fashion of choice.
The fans revelled in the atmosphere buoyed on by lights, flames and music until Lukas Podolski buried the match's first goal into the net off the hands of Mark Schwarzer.
The disappointment of fans was obvious with a raft of supporters leaving at half-time when the match stood at 2-0. For those who stayed on, things didn't improve, with another two goals for the Germans leaving some fans flat.
"Depressing, I mean it was going to happen, as Lucas said on Saturday, they are a superior team, that's the way it goes, that's what happens when we are a relative minnow nation, against a team that's won three times, but 4-0 is brutal, 4-0 is tough," one fan told SBS.
"Next time I think I'll head to George St and watch it in 3D, coming back here to spend all night waiting for a 4-0 defeat, probably not again," another fan said.
With many Aussie fans disappointed about having to arrive hours before the match in icy temperatures, German fans were not the least bit deterred.
"We tried to cheer for Australia in the end because it was kind of bad for them so we did not have fun... because we like this country, but it was kind of bad in the end" said one German fan.
With another fan stating "It was pretty embarrassing for Australia wasn't it?"
