Footy fans to be booted over bad behaviour

Victoria Police will boost its numbers at sporting events at Etihad Stadium from this weekend after "unacceptable behaviour" at the venue.

Footy fans have been warned to pull up their socks or prepare to be booted from Etihad Stadium after a spate of violent behaviour led to a man being banned for life and stripped of his AFL membership.

Melbourne Stadium's chief executive Michael Green told reporters on Monday a violent brawl at the stadium in the Medallion Club on Friday night was "abhorrent".

A 46-year-old Carnegie man has been charged with intentionally and recklessly causing injury, affray, possessing cocaine and resisting police, and will appear in court in September.

He also received the stadium's first permanent ban.

"We will take decisive action against anyone found breaching the stadium's conditions of entry," Mr Green said.

The footy fan also had his AFL membership cancelled and will not be able to apply for any AFL club membership indefinitely, after the fight at the Collingwood versus Western Bulldogs match.

"Anti-social behaviour, and in this particular instance by a small number of people, will not be tolerated by any of our venues, our clubs, or the league," AFL general manager clubs Travis Auld said.

"Strong consequences must apply if or when these types of incidents occur."

It is reportedly the third brawl at the stadium in a week and footy fans will see more police in public, corporate and membership areas from this weekend.

Mr Green said a comprehensive briefing before and after every event would continue, while the organisation would review its processes with nothing off the table for consideration.

"We will not accept any behaviour that places that safety at risk," Mr Green said.

Victoria Police Acting Commander David Clayton said only a few people were responsible for the "completely unacceptable" antics and police numbers would be ramped up at the stadium from this weekend.

"Anyone found to be drunk, assaulting anyone or engaging in an affray will be arrested, appear at court and then they can explain their behaviour to the magistrates, the community and their family," he said.

"We will not tolerate the behaviour we are seeing at these sporting events. People need to be responsible."

Anyone found guilty in court may also be barred from the licensed premises for two years, he added.

Acting Cmdr Clayton said the number of incidents wasn't increasing, but rather "with social media ... everyone has the opportunity to broadcast".

It comes after reports of a person allegedly being glassed in a lounge at the GMHBA Stadium in South Geelong during Saturday's game between the Cats and Carlton, while a brawl broke out in the carpark.

Geelong Football Club said the club could revoke and suspend memberships, if deemed appropriate, after reviewing the alleged incidents.
