Ford Australia will source vehicle parts from 63 suppliers after it switches from car manufacturing to engineering and design.

The carmaker says it will also increase the number of aftermarket parts suppliers it helps seal contracts with Ford's global operations.

Ford announced in 2014 that it would stop making vehicles in Australia from October 2016 and instead focus on designing new cars.

It has made hundreds of workers redundant as it winds down operations at its Broadmeadows and Geelong plants in Victoria.
