Foreign influence list registrations flop

Only nine people and organisations are on the government's foreign influence transparency list, despite the grace period for registrations closing on Sunday.

There are nine people and groups on the federal government's foreign influence transparency list, despite the grace period for registrations ending.

The three-month grace period for foreign influence activities and arrangements already in place ended on Sunday.

Failing to register or updating information can warrant penalties of up to five years in prison.

Former Liberal minister Brendan Nelson is one of the nine on the list, having declared himself as an advisory board member of Thales Australia Limited.

The technology group is one-quarter owned by France.

Attorney-General Christian Porter says there's nothing wrong with working for a foreign entity.

"It can be quite appropriate to try to influence - as opposed to interfere - with governmental decision making and democratic processes," he said in a statement.

"However, the Australian community has a right to see who is trying to exert such influence and why."

There are 18 late registrations current being processed, which are expected to be on the list in coming weeks.
