Former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has tested positive for COVID-19.

"Like hundreds of thousands of other Australians I have tested positive for covid. Symptoms moderate so far. Isolating as required," Mr Turnbull wrote on Twitter on Saturday.

"This pandemic and especially this latest wave has put our health professionals under enormous pressure - please be polite and considerate when dealing with the front-line health workers.

"...They have had two years of relentless pressure and it’s now at its most intense. So give them the love and respect they deserve, please."

It comes after Treasurer Josh Frydenberg confirmed he had tested positive for the virus.

In a tweet on Friday night, he said he had "the common symptoms" and was isolating with his family.

"My thoughts are with all those who have COVID - this is a difficult time but we will get through this," he added.
In a reply to Mr Frydenberg's tweet, Shadow Treasurer Jim Chalmers said: "Sorry to hear it, Josh. All the best for a speedy recovery."

Just a day after Mr Frydenberg announced his diagnosis,

Mr Frydenberg is the latest member of the cabinet to test positive for the virus, with others including Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce who was forced into isolation in Washington DC in December

In March 2020, Peter Dutton was the first federal MP to be diagnosed with coronavirus.
The current Defence Minister was briefly hospitalised after waking up with a temperature and a sore throat.

Mr Dutton said he had no idea how or where he picked up the virus but believes it was in the US where he had been attending meetings.

"But I was pretty, you know, pretty militant about the hand sanitiser," he added.

Some 78,166 new cases were reported in Australia on Friday, with 38,625 in NSW, 21,728 in Victoria and 10,953 in Queensland.
