Woolworths has appointed a former merchandise chief of US retailer Target as a non-executive director.

Kathee Tesija led merchandising and supply chain functions at Target Corporation in the US for about seven years, Woolworths said in announcing her appointment on Monday.

Ms Tesija continues to be a strategic adviser to the group and is also an independent director of US telecommunications company Verizon and a senior adviser and consultant for a US consulting agency, Simpactful.

Woolworths chairman Gordon Cairns said Ms Tesija's international perspective would also add value, and her appointment boosts Woolworths' representation of women on the board to 50 per cent.
