Formula 1 announced it will replace the grid girls with a new program called 'Grid Kids' to make the pre-race ceremony more relevant.
Grid girls traditionally undertook a variety of promotional activities during a Grand Prix event and would accompany the winning drivers on the podium during the awards ceremony.
The Grid Kids program comes after the sporting body announced last week it would no longer be using female promotional models on the grid before the beginning of the race starting with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on 25 March.
On Monday, F1 and FIA announced a new partnership to allow budding drivers a chance to accompany motorists on the grid to "make the pre-race ceremony more relevant and interesting for fans, especially the younger ones."
The statement said the children would be put forward by their motorsport club on merit, or by lottery, before walking out with the motorists on the grid.
"Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motor sport and the dream of every young racer competing the junior series that make up the FIA’s single-seater pyramid, from karting all the way to F1," FIA President Jean Todt said.
"We are therefore delighted to bring that dream a little closer by giving the future champions of our sport the opportunity to stand alongside their heroes on the grid in the build-up to the race start."
The Grid Kids will be chosen for every Formula 1 race throughout the season.
