Andrew Forrest confirmed as head of review into Indigenous employment training programs.

Mining magnate Andrew Forrest will head up a federal government-initiated review into Indigenous employment and training programs.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced the findings will be delivered within six months.

The policy and review were first announced on the campaign trail in the Pilbara at one of Forrest's mines.

Today Mr Abbott confirmed the plan to deliver jobs through the Employment Covenant.

He thanked the private sector for its work in Indigenous employment.

"I want to congratulate all of the businesses involved in the Australian Employment Covenant. I think this does offer a new beginning to Indigenous people who want to have a serious career in the private sector and I want to thank Andrew Forrest for the committment he has shown," Mr Abbott said.

But not everyone agrees this is the best way to improve the job situation for Indigenous communities.

Professor Jon Altman, from the University of Canberra, said Andrew Forrest might not be the best person to chair the review.

The review will provide recommendations to ensure programs are properly targeted and administered.

Mr Forrest will work closely with the PM's new Indigenous Advisory Council on the review, which will report back on April 7 next year.
