Four men have been hospitalised after a shooting in a town at the southern tip of Sweden, regional police have confirmed.

Authorities were called to the scene at around 10.30 pm (local time) on Thursday in the centre of Trelleborg, 650 kilometres south-west of Stockholm, regional police spokesperson Fredrik Bratt told newspaper Expressen.

Two people were apparently shot in the incident, which occurred near the town's main shopping street, while two others received other injuries, he said.

The cause of the shooting is not yet known.

Swedish news agency TT spoke to a witness who said that he heard six large bangs from his apartment and saw "several people" running around. "It was chaotic," he said, adding that the police arrived soon after the shooting.

An unspecified number of people have been apprehended for questioning, the police said, and a special division responsible for dealing with serious crime is now investigating.
