Four-metre shark sighting at Sydney beach sparks evacuation

A four-metre shark has been spotted 150 metres off Maroubra Beach in Sydney's eastern suburbs, forcing its temporary closure and prompting water patrols.

A four-metre shark has been spotted off a popular surf beach in Sydney's eastern suburbs, forcing the beach's temporary closure.

The shark was seen 150 metres off Maroubra Beach on Saturday morning, according to Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopters, who dispatched a helicopter to the scene.

"Extensive air and water search has been completed. No further sightings of any marine life. Maroubra Beach has been reopened," the air rescue service posted to Twitter shortly before 11am.

Randwick Council lifeguards initially closed the beach while Surf Life Saving NSW and an offshore rescue boat patrolled the waters.
