More than four million Australians use Snapchat every day - that's more than a third of smartphone user across the country.

New figures released by Snap Inc on Friday show Snapchat is most popular between 18 and 34 year olds in Australia.

Users express themselves by making made-for-mobile content about what's happening in their lives by using filters, lenses and Geofilters through the app.

International companies have taken note of the growth in Australia and use it to their advantage with companies like Chanel, Dan Murphy's and Commonwealth Bank advertising through the app.

Other companies like AAMI, National Australia Bank and McDonalds have paid for themed lenses.

That's good news for the company, which has a small team of 15 based in Sydney - founded in May 2016.

Snapchat, founded in 2011, began as an app for sharing photos that disappear after they have been viewed.

Since then more than 150 million people use the app every day worldwide.

Facebook is the most popular social media site in Australia, closely followed by Youtube.
