Four US citizens were killed and two injured in an attack on the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul, the US State Department says.

"We can confirm that there were four US citizens killed and two injured," State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement on Wednesday following Saturday's attack.

"We offer our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who were killed and wish for the speedy recovery of those wounded," she said.

At least 22 people, including 14 foreigners, were killed in a bloody assault on a luxury hotel in Kabul, an interior ministry spokesman said, hours after the overnight attack ended.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack on the six-storey Intercontinental Hotel on a hilltop overlooking the Afghan capital.

Terrified guests trapped at the top of the building tied bedsheets together and climbed over balconies to escape the overnight assault.
