Fourteen dead on our roads these holidays

Motorcyclist have died in South Australian and Victorian accidents, bringing the national holiday road toll up to 14.

The national road toll this holiday period has risen to 14, following the deaths of motorcyclists in South Australia and Victoria, and a boy in Brisbane.

A man in South Australia crashed while riding his motorbike in Snowtown before midday on Tuesday, making it the first fatality for the state during the holiday period.

On Tuesday night a man in his 40s was killed when his motorbike collided with an oncoming car in Port Arlington, southwest Victoria, taking the state's toll for the holiday period to four.

Also on South Australian roads a man died after his car smashed into a tree in Adelaide's south.

The male driver died at the scene of the crash in Morphett Vale shortly before 7pm on Tuesday, while his female passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

In Victoria, a man died after a car he was in with two other men crashed into a tree about 5.30am on Tuesday in Somerville, southeast of Melbourne.

In Queensland a nine-year-old boy died in hospital of his injuries on Tuesday, after a car had hit him while viewing the Christmas lights at Springwood on Christmas Day.

His death takes Queensland's road toll for the holiday period to three.

A 26-year-old man, from Taree, became NSW's third fatality of the period when he lost control of his ute and crashed into a tree at Marlee.

The collision occurred about 3am on Tuesday and was heard by a local who went to investigate and discovered the wreckage.

In Western Australia a teenage boy has died after being thrown off a quad bike.

The 16-year-old boy who was killed was one of three people on a quad bike travelling along an unsealed section of road in Marrinup, south of Perth, on Monday afternoon.

The 40-year-old rider lost control of the bike and hit a tree, with the force throwing him and his two pillion passengers off.

The rider and a 17-year-old boy suffered serious injuries and were taken to hospital, while the boy's death from his injuries took the WA road toll for the holiday period to two.

Thirty-four people died on the nation's roads during the 2015/16 holiday period.
