Fourth lay day at surfing's Pipe Masters

Australian surfer Julian Wilson's tilt at the world title was put on hold for a fourth day as the start of the season-ending Pipe Masters was delayed again.

Australian surfer Julian Wilson's world title tilt will likely begin on Thursday after a fourth lay day was called at the Pipe Masters in Hawaii.

World No.2 Wilson is one of three men waiting in the wings to be crowned world champion at the season-ending event at Pipeline, but leftover swell and stormy weather have put the event on hold for another day.

The contending trio might not have to wait much longer, with a new swell tipped to build later today and hold for the next few days.

"It is looking really good for tomorrow. Almost one-hundred per cent certain that we will get underway with the Pipe Invitational," World Surf League commissioner Kieren Perrow said.

Event officials will make another call on whether to commence competition on Thursday at 0430 AEDT.

Wilson sits on 51,450 points, level with Felipe Toledo and just 4750 points behind leader Gabriel Medina, after 11 events.

The 30-year-old Wilson would be crowned world champion with a victory at the famous Banzai Pipeline surf break if Medina fails to make the final.

A place in the final would also hand Wilson the title if Brazilian Medina fails to make the semi-finals and his countryman Toledo does not win the event.
