Sydney superstar Lance Franklin has been cleared to play in the Swans' round-one AFL game after recovering from off-season groin surgery.

The eight-time All-Australian will take his spot his in the Swans' forward line against the Western Bulldogs on Saturday night at Marvel Stadium.

"He won't play the entire game but he will get better as the weeks progress, so we are looking forward to a really good game from Lance," Sydney coach John Longmire said.

The Bulldogs' team features Hawthorn premiership player Taylor Duryea and ex-Richmond utility Sam Lloyd.

Beaten grand finalists Collingwood will be boosted by the return of livewire forward Jamie Elliott, who will play his first match in 573 days when the Magpies clash with Geelong.

Elliott's last AFL match came in round 23, 2017 when he kicked three goals in a victory over Melbourne.

Magpies coach Nathan Buckley said Elliott was in great shape to tackle the next stage of his career.

"(Jamie is) a little bit older, a little bit wiser, a little bit more mature and understanding and appreciative of the opportunities that come along," Buckley said.

Premiership Bulldog Jordan Roughead has been named for his Magpies debut, while Dayne Beams will again appear in black and white after his off-season trade from Brisbane.

The Cats have selected six new faces for Friday night's match at the MCG, including former Bulldog Luke Dahlhaus and speedster Gary Rohan from Sydney.

The news isn't as positive for reigning premiers West Coast, who will be without star forward Josh Kennedy for their trip to the Gabba.

Eagles coach Adam Simpson was desperate to use the dual Coleman medallist against Brisbane despite his off-season injury troubles, but was overruled by medical staff.

Kennedy will have to wait until West Coast unfurl their premiership flag in round two against GWS to play his 200th game for the club.

Fellow premiership forwards Jamie Cripps and Willie Rioli also won't play due to foot injuries.

GWS have been dealt a blow ahead of Sunday's match against Essendon, with star midfielder Josh Kelly ruled out after an interrupted pre-season.

Former ace Giant Dylan Shiel has been picked to start on a wing in his first game for the Bombers.

Star St Kilda midfielder Jack Steven will play against Gold Coast after taking a short break due to mental health reasons, while the Suns will go into the game with eight new faces.

In the final game of the round, recruits Aaron Hall, Jasper Pittard, Jared Polec and Dom Tyson will feature for North Melbourne against Fremantle.

While former Demons forward Jesse Hogan serves an alcohol-related ban, former Giants big man Rory Lobb will start forward for the Dockers.
