Police have charged two Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire councillors with fraud, while one has also been charged with assault.

Police say they first received complaints in July about the two councillors, both 46, allegedly falsifying council minutes and using council credit cards for personal use.

It is also alleged that one of the men assaulted a colleague in August.

ABC has reported the men are prominent members of the council.

Investigations are continuing, and both men will appear in the Doomadgee Magistrates Court on September 14.
