Free flu shots for kids before Vic winter

Victorian families with children aged under five can have their kids vaccinated from the flu for free from May, the state government has announced.

Victorian children aged under five can get free flu vaccinations under a $3.5 million program announced by the state government.

Families with children aged six months to five can have their kids vaccinated from May at GPs or community health services, before the onset of the peak flu season.

Health Minister Jill Hennessy said the government would continue to urge the federal government to expand the national immunisation program to vulnerable groups including children.

Victoria weathered one of its worst ever flu seasons in 2017.

"We're ensuring kids aged under five can access a free flu vaccination before another deadly flu season starts, and we'll keep pressuring Malcolm Turnbull and the Liberals to protect Victorian kids permanently," Ms Hennessy said in a statement on Saturday.

The state's opposition labelled the announcement a "half-baked version" of its own policy outlined last year.

Shadow Assistant Health Minister Margaret Fitzherbert said the coalition had committed to funding vaccinations over a four-year period, for children aged six months to five years.

"Today what we've seen is an on-the-run sort of announcement from the government in which they commit to funding for one year only and have a go at the federal government on the way out," she said.
