From missiles to makeup: Kim Jong-un tours beauty factory with wife in rare public appearance

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was accompanied by his wife on a visit to a newly-renovated cosmetics factory in Pyongyang, state media reports.

The couple inspected the factory's production lines and took a close look at a mosaic of Kim's late father, Kim Jong II, entitled 'To Provide Our People with Better Cosmetics'.

The mosiac commemorates the visit made to the factory by Kim Jong Il in 2003.

Kim and his wife Ri Sol Ju, who reportedly have three children together, are rarely seen in public together.

The KCNA report noted that Kim told factory workers they were helping to realise "the dream of the women who want to be more beautiful".

Photos released by state-run news agency KCNA on Sunday show Kim admiring beauty products and perfumes, talking and laughing with officials.

Grinning for the cameras, he held up a pink gift bag of products, praising the quality of the packaging.

It's a different look for the North Korean leader, who is more often seen alongside missiles and military equipment.
Tensions remain high on the Korean Peninsula after a series of North Korean nuclear missile tests and racheting up of rhetoric from Kim and US President Donald Trump.

The day before the cosmetics factory visit, US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis, said America would "never accept" a nuclear-armed North Korea during his visit to Seoul.
