What do broadcaster Rove McManus, aviator Lachlan Smart and Olympic cyclist Anna Meares all have in common with a Queensland pizza bar?

They've just joined more than 100 other Aussies in the latest Guinness Book of World Records.

A total of 110 Aussies made the cut this year, pushing Australia into third spot for the most number of entries after the US and Britain.

Rove named the most animal species identified from their sounds - 16 in one minute - during his 2DayFM radio show last September, while Lachlan Smart was recognised for becoming the youngest person to fly solo around the world in a single-engine aircraft.

As an 18-year-old, Smart set off in his Cirrus SR22 from Maroochydore on Queensland's Sunshine Coast on July 4 last year, stopping in 24 locations in 15 countries before landing back where he started on August 27.

"There were no major failures of equipment ... but I did have trouble with air traffic control coming out of Indonesia," he said after landing back on home soil.

"They would have run me into a mountain if I had gone with their instructions."

Aussie musicians also featured prominently, with pop quartet 5 Seconds of Summer claiming the most popular group category - and the second most popular music act overall - on US social media platform Snapchat on March 10 this year.

Silverchair was recognised for clocking up 21 ARIA music awards, while singing superstar Sia made the list for her single Cheap Thrills being the most streamed track on Spotify by a female artist in 2016.

Champion cyclist Anna Meares accumulated the most Olympic track cycling medals for women when the bronze she won at the Rio Games was added to the other five Olympic medals she's collected since 2004.

Fellow Olympians Cate Campbell, Emma McKeon, Bronte Campbell and Brittany Elmslie were included for setting a new record of 3 minutes and 30.65 seconds in the 4 x 100m freestyle relay in Rio.

Some less well known Aussie sporting types also earned a spot for setting quirky records, including Perth's Bernadette Benson who ran the greatest distance on a treadmill when she clocked up 128.62km in 12 hours in May last year.

Kathryn Beeley was the woman who did the most burpees in one hour - 1,321 - while Eva Clarke set records for the most pull ups in 60 minutes - 725.

For those more interested in food than fitness, a Queensland Crust Pizza bar made the cut for making the largest ever dessert pizza last September.

Topped with chocolate, strawberries, blueberries and dollops of cream the pizza stretched a whopping 46.6m and weighed 120kg when it was unveiled at the Gold Coast Convention & Exhibition Centre last September.
