They may see through different coloured glasses on Syria, but when it comes to champagne glasses it's all "cheers".

US President Barack Obama and Russia's Vladimir Putin have clinked flutes at a lunch on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York on Monday (Tuesday AEST).

Mr Putin had a grin on his face while his American counterpart was sombre.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop attended the lunch, which was hosted by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for the heads of delegations.

In his toast Mr Ban joked: "There is no such thing as a free lunch."

Mr Obama praised Mr Ban for his leadership of the UN, saying the challenges of the day were "testing".

"To all of our nations; to the United Nations; to the people that we represent and to whom we have responsibilities towards -- amid the inevitable trials and setbacks may we never relax in our pursuit of progress and may we never abandon the pursuit of peace. Cheers."
