Labor has accused the man responsible for the government's new energy plan of angling for the Liberal leadership at the expense of his portfolio.

Backbencher Pat Conroy fronted reporters in Canberra on Monday, brandishing a Fairfax Media profile, to label Josh Frydenberg a self-confessed "media tart, tennis obsessive and Robert Menzies fan boy".

"What is clear is he is trailing his CV all around parliament at the moment, in case Malcolm gets to make it to 30 in terms of losing polls and he's ready to step up and compete with Peter Dutton for the prime ministership," the MP said.
