The days of mobile phone calls dropping out when trains go though Melbourne's city loop tunnel are now over with the introduction of full mobile coverage.

High quality 3G and 4G coverage was rolled out on Thursday throughout Melbourne's 12 kilometres of rail tunnels and underground stations.

The project, which was announced by the previous government in 2014, was delayed by almost a year amid concerns the mobile coverage could interfere with the digital radio system used by train drivers.
