Funds for SA domestic violence victims

The SA government will spend $4m for 40 new crisis accommodation beds and $5m on interest-free loans to fund new domestic violence support housing.

The South Australian budget will include nearly $12 million to help people fleeing domestic violence.

The funding includes $4 million for 40 new emergency crisis accommodation beds and $5 million on interest-free loans to non-government organisations to fund new domestic violence support housing.

Acting Premier Vickie Chapman says the measures will target women at risk as well as those who are already experiencing violence and in need of respite.

"It was critical for (Premier Steven Marshall), on all of our advice, that this very first budget is to fund initiatives which will make a difference," she said.

Human Services Minister Michelle Lensink said the government was still deciding where the beds would be located.

"We've had one regional roundtable and we've got three more planned, so we want to make sure that they're actually located in the areas of greatest demand," she said.

"I think that once we determine the priority I can't see that, apart from the building approval process, that they will take very long because the money is now available."

Ms Chapman said arrangements had also been finalised for the domestic disclosure scheme, which allows women access to information about their partner's criminal history.

The government will spend $510,000 on the trial scheme, as well as $624,000 to support the work of the South Australian Coalition of Women's Domestic Violence Services.

It will spend $1.66 million on a 24-hour domestic violence crisis hotline, and $150,000 on the development of a personal protection app linking at-risk women directly to police and services.

The SA budget will be handed down on September 6.
