Treasurer Scott Morrison believes there are encouraging signs pointing to an improvement in the global economy and that's good news for Australia.

The world situation had been in a "funk for many years now", he told ABC radio on Friday.

"The good news for Australians is that for many years we've dealt with a very flat world environment."

"Things are starting to pick up."

The treasurer cited as "real positive signs" inflation picking up in Europe and very strong confidence coming out of the US with speculation of another rate rise.

Mr Morrison said his May 9 budget would say to Australians 'we want to see these opportunities realised'.

"There are real opportunities there, you can see that light, and we've got to keep working to ensure that we can move towards that growth that is there for the taking."
