G20 host Xi Jinping says he hopes the China summit addresses the causes and symptoms of global economic problems.

The Chinese president is hosting Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and other world leaders in the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou.

"We should make the G20 an action team rather than a talk shop," President Xi told the opening of the summit on Sunday.
