Scans have cleared Shannon Gabriel of an ankle fracture but the West Indies fast bowler will take no further part in Australia's mammoth first innings in the opening Test in Hobart.

A Windies team spokesman said they would know more about Gabriel's availability for the tour on Friday.

Gabriel was seen at Bellerive Oval on crutches on Friday in a worrying sign for Windies fans.

Gabriel produced a rare spark with the ball for the tourists, clean bowling opener Joe Burns for 33 and pushing 160kph before breaking down late on Thursday's first day.

Australia made 3-438 on the first day - the most runs the Windies had conceded in a day in their Test history.
