A fuel tank explosion has killed more than 100 people in Muammar Gaddafi's hometown Sirte, as the slain ex-leader's body was secretly buried in the desert.

A fuel tank has exploded in Muammar Gaddafi's hometown Sirte killing more than 100 people just two days after the deposed despot was captured and killed there.

"There was an enormous explosion and a huge fire. More than 100 people were killed and 50 others wounded" in Monday night's blast, National Transitional Council commander Leith Mohammed told AFP.

He said the scene was "a heart wrenching spectacle with dozens of charred bodies."

The explosion happened as a crowd of people waited near the fuel tank to fill up their cars.

"We are still unable to put out the fire," Mohammed said.

Some of the victims had returned to the town, the last bastion of resistance by Gaddafi loyalists, which fell on Thursday, to inspect the damage to their properties, the NTC commander added.

GADDAFI BURIED

Meanwhile, the NTC said that ex-dictator Gaddafi's body had been buried in a secret location in the desert.

Gaddafi was killed after a months-long and bloody battle with the NTC, who ousted him from power.

The US urged Libya's new leaders to probe reported atrocities committed by anti-Gaddafi fighters, amid claims dozens of loyalists were executed.

Muslim clerics were reportedly present at the burial, and Gaddafi's son Mutassim - killed in the same attack on Sirte - was allegedly buried at the same time.
