Gale blows hot to win PNG Open golf

NSW's Daniel Gale has cantered to a nine-stroke victory at the PNG Open golf championship in Port Moresby.

Young Australian golfer Daniel Gale will fly out to attempt US Open qualifying with fresh confidence after a scorching win in the PNG Open.

Gale flew home with a six-under par 66 at Royal Port Moresby GC on Sunday to win the PGA Tour of Australia event at 23-under, a whopping nine shots clear of countrymen Tim Stewart (72) and Braden Becker (66).

The big victory came after he shot 22-under last week to win the Morobe Open on the pro-am series.

The 21-year-old New South Welshman credited hard work on his short game which was razor-sharp as he chipped in at the 16th for his fourth successive birdie, converting an overnight three-shot lead into a victory stroll.

"The last two holes were a lot of fun; I had a seven-shot lead with two holes to go and could just enjoy the walk," said Gale, who earned $21,750 and fully exempt status on the tour until the end of 2019.

Next for Gale is a trip to America to attempt to qualify for the US Open and pre-qualify for a handful of Web.com Tour events.

"America's my main focus, so I'm going to try and get in to the US Open and if I get in there and play well that obviously opens more doors," said Gale.

"I'll focus on a couple of Web.com Tour events and potentially the Web.com Q-School as well."
