Gastro death linked to Melbourne outbreak

A woman died and 13 others were sick after contracting Salmonella from food prepared in a kitchen used by Meals on Wheels in Melbourne.

A woman died of gastro in an outbreak that left 13 others ill after eating at a Melbourne council kitchen.

The 91-year-old was among the 14 people who contracted Salmonella after eating food from a kitchen used by Meals on Wheels in the Moreland City Council.

The council said on Tuesday the woman contracted gastro after eating the food at the Bob Hawke Centre in Coburg in December.

The other 13 people who became sick had eaten food delivered to them in December by Meals on Wheels.

The Department of Health says it became suspicious of a common link after numerous cases of food poisoning from the area were reported in December.

But while a link was determined, the cause was not found and the kitchen is still being used, with no further outbreaks reported.
