Mike Gatting will succeed another former England captain in Mike Brearley to become the next chairman of the MCC world cricket committee.
The committee, an independent body comprising current and former international players and umpires, made headlines recently when it announced proposals on bat sizes and the introduction of red card penalties for poor behaviour.
Since Brearley, an inaugural member of the committee since its inception 10 years ago, replaced Tony Lewis as chairman in 2011, he has also promoted playing cricket at the Olympics and has overseen the development of day-night Tests.
Brearley, widely regarded as one of England's greatest-ever captains, will step down from his role next September when his second term comes to an end with Gatting replacing him, subject to approval by MCC members at May's annual general meeting.
Gatting, who captained England from 1986 to 1988, served as MCC president during the Lord's Bicentenary year in 2014.
Current MCC president Matthew Fleming said: "Mike Brearley combines humility, intellect and an unrivalled cricket knowledge to great effect, and the club is rightly proud of the world cricket committee's achievements under his leadership.
"Mike Gatting will bring a similar wealth of experience and enthusiasm to the role and I look forward to working with him."
