Gavrilova hopes for Barty semi in Sydney

Daria Gavrilova has already faced two fellow Australians at the Sydney International and could yet meet a third if fortunes fall Ashleigh Barty's way.

Daria Gavrilova hopes to meet Ashleigh Barty in the Sydney International semi-finals - and it's no surprise given her remarkable record against fellow Australians.

Since gaining Australian residency in 2013, Russian-born Gavrilova has 12 wins and one loss to compatriots, the only defeat coming on clay to Samantha Stosur in last May's Strasbourg International final.

On Wednesday night the tables were turned on the hard court of Ken Rosewall Arena, where Gavrilova saw off second-round opponent Stosur in straight sets.

"Definitely clay is Sam's favourite surface, but I think it is mine as well," the 23-year-old said.

"But it is probably a better match-up playing against Sam on hard for me.

"These conditions are probably a little bit better for me."

That win followed Tuesday's first-round victory over another countrywoman Olivia Rogowska, and could yet precede a third all-Australian match-up.

By virtue of Garbine Muguruza's withdrawal through injury, Gavrilova will advance directly to the semi-finals - her first in this tournament.

Should Barty beat Czech veteran Barbora Strycova in Thursday's quarter-final, she will face Gavrilova on Friday.

"I feel like I'm playing the Australian nationals," Gavrilova said.

"She (Barty) is playing some great tennis and she deserves all the success she's had.

"Hopefully it will happen and we will have a good battle."

Gavrilova couldn't pinpoint why she has had so much success against other Australians.

"I don't know, I think it just happens ... somehow I end up winning," she said.

"It is tough playing a friend and a teammate, because we are all actually pretty close - we always hang out together when we're touring."
